Week 4 Reflection

Delicious.com / Trends and Issues in Instructional Design and Technology:

After signing up for the delicious.com bookmarking site, my initial thoughts were admittedly a bit on the negative side. It seemed to me to be a very basic concept, and I really didn’t see the use/functionality of such a service. Having some time to think about it, and play with it a bit, I’ve changed my opinion slightly. As simple as it looks, this site can be an awesome tool to assist teachers to help students share their resources. I’m relatively sure that if any one of us sat down to another persons computer, we would find a plethora of bookmark for useful sights that that person uses on a regular basis. Delicious.com offers a way for people to share those bookmarks/resources with others. This could really help in group projects for people to have access to their group members resources as well, without everyone having to do the hunting part of the research. I really think that there a likely endless uses for this type of tool. Not only could it be used as a tool for teachers to use with students, but teachers could share their “resources” with their colleagues. I’m thinking that this is really a great tool!
Trends and Issues in Instructional Design and Technology: After reading chapter 1 of the text, I have to admit that I had no idea as to the depth of the history of technology. Not only the history, but also the evolution of what once was purely a media, and visual based definition, all the way to the authors definition which has encompassed all of the historical views (mostly), and built upon many of the most recent concept.

While reading this chapter, I was intrigued to see that the latest AECT definition included “ethical practice” within their definition in 2006 as it relates to facilitating learning, and improving performance. I was particularly interested in this because this shows a slight connection to the aviation industry. In order to become an airline transport pilot (to be an airline captain), it is stated in the Federal Aviation Regulations that you must be of “Good moral Character”. Although this isn’t a huge connection, I can definitely relate, and understand why the AECT would find it necessary to include such a statement in their definition.

Althought I was a bit surprised at the indepth history, I'm also very curious to see where future advances in technology will change even the authors definition.

In reply to your statement above:

I too, agree that adding an ethics-based element to the definition is interesting. I also think it's a great idea, though! There are far too many ways technology can be used improperly, to harm others, etc., so it is important to include "ethical" in the definition of such fields in an attempt to curb the activities of such persons who might use it in a negative manner.

I too, will need more time to explore delicious and see the true benefits. It is a great and convenient collection place with easy access, although I wasn't able to completely explore it before I wrote my reflection. I did find a couple of new and interesting web sites through delicious and hope to add some more of areas of personal interest and pull from that.

Professional definitions have a lot to be desired in my eyes. I think I need to live the profession and develop my own definition. Ethics, morals, process, efficient, are all key words in many professions. So, therefore, the definitions I read in chapter one are generalized.

I'll admit that when I first started using the delicious site I had similar feelings to yours, in that it didn't have a lot of use that I didn't have in other methods, such as simply bookmarking your favorites on your computer. I'm glad that you also saw how this can be a great tool. As I played around with it, and searched through the tags of sites bookmarked by others there was a plethera of good information at my fingertips. It's amazing what we can find as we play around with a new tool.
In regards to your comments on the ethics, I also agree that is a necessary component to the definition. So often ehtics are overlooked and ignored, and it is much more easily done in the field of technology. It's really too bad that this happens so often. Hopefully we can use the technology to hold students to a higher code of ethics, as well as people in other areas of life.
